Punk and Football

From my younger brother:
Halloween night...The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson...John Lydon and Steve Jones being interviewed and The Sex Pistols performing!! Fucking A!
So it's no bit mystery what I'll be watching after I donk out of the Mookie tonight.

The football part? Joe Thiesman's on the show too.

Lemurs for Hoy

I'm the one on the end.

You'd all be so proud of me

Today while playing a $6+.50 turbo SnG, I caught AA on the button. It's late in the game (4 left, blinds at 150/300), I'm the chip leader by a bit. Everyone folds, I raise to 1500. SB fold, (BB who has about T500 less than me) re-raises and goes allin. I think for about a nano-second and call.

He flips over 32 off.

I'll pause to let that sink in......

Three. Two. Offsuit.

When I lost the pot to quad two's (!!), I didn't freak, I didn't call him a fucktard, I didn't call him a donkey, I did nothing that could be construed as tapping on the glass.

I very slowly typed " wow. that was an amazing push there." Enter.

"Your heart must be racing" Enter.

"You should obviously keep following your instincts - they're pretty awesome!" Enter.

I then tilted off the rest of my stack, waited patiently, then followed the poor sap to his next two $6 + .50 turbo SnG's where I took great pleasure in stacking him.

Both times.

Revenge is oh so sweet.

****

BTW, I just hit 500 blog posts. Do I get a prize or something?

What I didn't do this weekend:
  • play poker live
  • catch up on my marking
  • create a test for the grade 9's for Monday (forgot the damn textbook @ school)
  • finish my documentation for the Ministry of Education
  • clean my apartment
What I did do:
  • knitted
  • watched old, old movies on TCM
  • watched old horror and cult movies on just about every other station
  • spent today hanging out with my friend, Jeany.
I needed today, more than I'd imagined. I've known Jeany for ages, since just after I moved to Toronto. Our nights out used to be going to Sluts and Dolts (it's real name was Nuts and Bolts), a punk/new wave club downtown. We'd dance and drink, then dance some more. The goal of the night was to try and find a party to go to before the ugly lights came on at 4.

Alas, now our get-togethers tend to be more ... sedate. Today we drove to Niagara-On-The-Lake, a very sweet little town that has turned notoriously touristy since the Shaw Festival took up residence. But stay off the main drag, and it's back to being a very nice place to spend a sunny fall afternoon; a good place to talk about the bad old days, the onset of menopause and everything in between.

So thanks to Jeany, for getting me out today. I'm feeling most blah and depressed without my man around; six weeks really is too long. It's good money and it's good for his career, but not so hot for my peace of mind.

And thanks to Jules and Sean for the phone calls this weekend. You didn't know it, but your timing was impeccable!

I'm only really happy when I'm overloaded. It gives me more to procrastinate with.

It's almost that time again.

I've been thinking about what my story will be and all I've got is a chick who goes on a motorcycle road trip. Not a real stretch of the imagination, but at least I have lots of road stories to draw from.

Garth and Gracie are in, and have put out a call for ideas and/or challenges, so here's the first blogger NaNoWriMo challenge:
  • include an out-of-work sword swallower
Oh, I have more possible challenges, but they're getting more and more twisted the more I think about them. I'll save those for later *grin.

I am too old for this shit.

Double stack games on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; two of them start at ten for gods sake!

Don't you donkeys know those are school nights? Don't any of you lot have jobs that you need to alert for the next day? Or is just me?

Fuck, I'm tired. Finished last night at 1:30-ish, set the alarm for 6:30, juuust drift off to sleep ...... and some fucknut pulls the fucking fire alarm at 3:30. Let me tell you, there's a 44-story apartment building filled with people who want to meet that guy.

(cranky, tired rant over. See you at the Riverchasers tonight.)

I get a little closer every time

And that's a good thing, right?

Man, I feel about hunnert years old today.

My right knee aches (the one that goes "cruuuunch" when I go up stairs). The pizza the school supplied the teachers for dinner has given me Vesuvius-like heartburn. The parent/teacher conferences went well, but 12-hour days at school not only suck, but suck the energy right out of me as well. My bike battery ran down, and I had to push start it, twinging my back AND losing one of my new $90 cold weather riding gloves in the process. I have a blister on my left heel. And I broke two nails down past the quick. I feel like I've been running like a hamster on a wheel - lots of action, but getting very little actually accomplished. One-step-forward, two-steps-back action, all the way.

I'm sore. I'm tired. And my brain is mush.

It's 9:33 now, and I'm seriously debating bailing on the Mookie tonight. While I truly want to play, I'm pretty sure I'm just going to be the poker equivalent of the red-shirt crew member on Star Trek.

What to do, what to do.......

EDIT:

Fuck it, I'm going to play. I can't guarantee I'm going to stay awake, but I think I can guarantee to pull off some Super Donkey Girl luckbox suckout calltard move and make someone tilt.

It's meme time again boys and girls!

Last night, I went to watch the show that Hunny Bunny is touring with. Now in the 10+ years that HB and I have been together, he's gotten me in to watch many shows. But I've never actually watched him work. Now I have little knowledge of the business other than what he's told me, but even I can tell he is good at what he does. There were sublime moments that raised goosebumps on my arms and sent shivers down my spine. I knew that while Colm is a talented performer and the room is a temple to rich sound, it takes someone with skill on the mixing board to bring that degree of warm texture to a piece.

Here's my notes from the evening:
He moves behind the console and puts on the slim black over-the-ear headset, the type (he tells me later) used on the set of Nikita because they look so sexy.

"What's going on?", he asks the crew, murmuring in that deep soft voice that makes me shiver. I'm jealous for a moment; I'd thought that voice was just for me. I want a headset, not to because I'm curious about what is said (although I am), but because I want to listen to that voice some more. I lean a bit closer trying to catch it, but it's too low. Even though he's only a foot away, he is drowned out by the comments of the woman behind me who is a noxious double whammy of shrill voice and inadequate feminine hygiene.

The lights dim, and the band begins to play. Men and women who just a half hour before were slouching around the green room and bitching like hungry teenagers that the catering was 20 minutes late are now consummate professionals. And so it is....our entertainment is their work, after all.
It was a great show, but not one I'd normally go see. Ever. I just wanted to spend a more time with HB before he headed west for next three weeks. I miss him again already.

****

I had planned on going to the club to play some live poker for a distraction and a change, but then found out Wednesday /Thursday is Faculty-Family conferences (aka Parent-Teacher Night).

GAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! Words cannot explain how much I dislike these evenings.

So I've decided to head for live play on Saturday. To BamBam and the TuckFard folks, let me know if any of you are up to joining me at Rama for the day, or part thereof. Otherwise I think I'll go south to fish the tourist-laden waters of Niagara Falls.

To quote Bruce Willis' character in The Kid:
Somebody better call the WAAAAHHHHmbulance.
Fuel has a comment in his blog that just cracked me up, on his second post about how he busted from the Big Game:
When you raise, get reraised and then the reraiser get rereraised you MUST fold all hands other than AA. (Perhaps the only caveat is if you are ultrashort or it's the late stages of a tournament).

It's just that fawking simple. And until you fully understand why this is so you will never become a great poker player.
Well here's a newsflash - this is not necessarily a goal that you share with your blogger brethren.
Again, here's another big difference in online vs live poker. Live poker is all about a million visual cues: how someone is dressed, how they carry themselves, how they speak; all of these things give your subconscious cues as to how that person operates, ie. are they serious, or having a giggle?

Online...not so much. So you make erroneous assumptions, that the game means the same to your opponents that it does to you.

Sometimes I play a $6+.50 Turbo SnG because it's all I can afford, and I'm trying to rebuild a bankroll again. Sometimes I play them because it's a quick poker fix before I do something else. And sometimes it's because for one reason or another, I just don't give a fuck and want to work out some stupidity/aggression/anger in a controlled stupid environment (I've run out of cheap breakables).

Case in point the following hand history. Stupid pays off sometimes, and yes I know it's a crushing blow to reason when it does, but it still does.

And on that note, I'm logging off my free wifi, and heading down to watch my beloved work his audio mojo. GL to all at the MATH!

Big Game, or BBToo #1

The Big Game starts in a few minutes, the kickoff of AlCantHang's BBToo.

Man, the effort this guy puts into keeping this loose collective of degenerates together (AND entertained!) is nothing short of amazing.

Al, m'dear, you are a prince among men. And that's not something I say lightly, or often. I do hope that you will allow me to assist keeping you in SoCo in Vegas!

****

9:30:
Ok, game's starting, I have Daddy, Recess Rampage, BuddyDank, BLinders, ck31 and A10419. there's 57 people in the game with a pot of almost $4k. Time to keep the claws sharp!

9:45
Sharp, yeah sure. I'm tired, been dozing on and off all day, trying to stave off this bug that Hunny Bunny has. I think I'm losing.

9:52
One of these days I'm going to learn to NOT chase a flush draw. I remember this AFTER I have donated about T1,000 to rpinner. Duh.

10:30
Break. I'm at T2,875. Not up at all, but now down much either. Average is only 3886, and the blinds are still low, so I'm just sitting back drinking some tea and waiting. Time enough for panic mode later.

10:50
Finally! The bitches show some love! My trip Q's > Blinders 2 pair, and I double up.

11:09
I get QA in the SB, a small allin ahead of me, TuscaloosaJohn has J5. the only card that helps either of us is a 5.

11:10
A wee tilt going on. KA on the button,TuscaloosaJohn raises ahead of me, I call, Daddy in the SB goes all in. 105 to call, so duh I do. Nothing helps Tuscaloosa or I, and daddy's KK takes it. Less than T2k now.

11:11
KJ hearts. Definitely more of a tilt, heading straight into the awfukkits. Call Tuscaloosa's pre-flop raise which puts me all in. He has QA, but the only face card is a J. I'm up to almost T5k, which is about where I was 3 minutes ago. Time to banish tilt, or say the hell with it and go to bed.

11:17
another new table, 27 left. Then Gary's gone when his rockets meets jeciimd's number of the beast and we're down to 26.

11:34
Out in 20th. Fuck me. course it was stupid 1) laying out that kind of bet with only AT, then 2) putting the last nail in the coffin and calling when jeciimd put me all in. But he'd been grabbing my blinds over a few rounds, and I was down to about T3600, M of under 5. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

The weekend started with a call down under. Hunny Bunny and I were sitting in bed looking over the city, sipping our first coffee of the morning and deciding where to go for brunch. The recipients of the call had guests over and were on their fourth of fifth bottle of wine for the evening and were discussing conspiracy theories and taking ghey photos.

To say it was surreal is an understatement. But it really brought home how much I miss my BFF, followed by the realization that the only way I'm going to see her within the next 12 months is if I take down the BBToo.

I have to. That's all there is to it. I hope you all understand.

****

The weekend has been a tad...disappointing. Not on a poker front (that is actually going quite well), but on a personal front. My beloved is 3 weeks into a cross-country tour, and had a 3 day stop in the GTA. It worked out that we both had Saturday free, and we were both looking forward to hanging out with each other.

Long and short of it, he started feeling unwell partway through our trip to the ROM, and ended up spending the afternoon and evening sleeping.

Not quite as planned.
****

Bloody. Hell.

Just busted out in the Britbloggerment after 2 hands. Hand one was crippling, three Queens vs. Acornman's Kings over Queens boat. The last T50 went when my KK failed against a set of someone else's QQ.

Godammit!

Friday Night Bloggerment

Once again, a very good time was had. Congrats to Hoy for taking it down!

In a not entirely unrelated sidenote, have I mentioned lately just how much I hate bubbling?

OK, I Stumbled Upon this, WHILE I was sorta kinda watching the movie for the millionth time. Twenty minutes later, I'm still giggling.

****

OK, I'm going to stop talking now. I can't get myself into anymore trouble that way ;-)

Hindsight is 20/20

Just look at this hand...isn't it pretty? Nothing like flopping a nut flush to restore your faith in online poker.

Pity I folded it pre-flop, isn't it? Almost 2 hours into an MTT, blinds at 200/400, I'm in the SB with these lovelies when the big stack raises it to 5x BB in front of me. I'm at T7000-ish, but am trying to really watch position, I decide I don't feel comfortable with it and I fold. (Q - Would you have?)

I really wish I hadn't, as I'd have chipped up nicely, enough so I wouldn't have been crippled by this hand shortly after:

Ah well. I played well, and what more can you ask?

****

Quote of the day comes from a chat with the ever-fabulous Gracie:

Poker's like life...it's fun if you don't take it too seriously.

It's that day of the week again.

The Blogger Donkament is tonight at 9:00 on Full Tilt, (PW donkarama). I call it poker therapy, and plan on going all in for the first five hands.

Maybe more.

Ooooo...and I almost forgot..after the wrangey rebuy period is over, don't forget Poker Enthusiast's Razz tourney:

A poker tale

Once upon a time, there was a girl who played in a weekly blogger game. She wasn't a serious kind of player, at least not in these games with her friends, or at this kind of buyin...hell, she would spend more on that for a coffee and a bearclaw in trendy cafes, so the money meant little to her.

In one of these games, the girl played a hammer. What the hell, she thought, it's fun, and it's what bloggers do apparently. And it FEELS right to play this now. So she made her hammer raise and had another sip of her strawberry marguerita (this was in the ancient pre-martini days).

Well it ended up her and her opponent were all-in. And her hammer ended up taking out the opponent. There was much hullabaloo the next day, when the opponent posted about the game in his blog, basically calling her a donkey and an idiot for playing that kind of shit.

The girl felt bad and apologised for her play, and made excuses for it. Upon reflection, she realized that that made her feel awful - one does not sell out instinct and intuition in such a cavalier fashion.

****

Fuck that shit. I play how I play. I won't make excuses for it anymore, and I won't apologise for it anymore.

You don't like it? Too bad .... I do.

****

I get why TenMile took his blog offline and started another more private one. It hit today to what extent I have been censoring myself, both watching what I say and writing for other people. In the words of my comic book hero, Tankgirl, bollocks to that!

Mysteries

mys·ter·y [mis-tuh-ree, -tree] –noun

  1. anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown: the mysteries of nature.
  2. any affair, thing, or person that presents features or qualities so obscure as to arouse curiosity or speculation: The masked guest is an absolute mystery to everyone.
  3. obscure, puzzling, or mysterious quality or character: the mystery of Mona Lisa's smile.
  4. any truth that is unknowable except by divine revelation.

Mysteries. They seem to crowding around me like flies at a picnic. I'm asking Why? Who? What? even though I know there is no answer.

****

On the way in to school a few days ago I saw a huge flock of sparrows twittering and feeding on a lawn newly sown with grass seed. this in and of itself isn't mysterious; but the presence of a green and gold budgie in their midst is.

****

I spent the long weekend at my older brother's place, and we spent a nice afternoon going through old, old photos. Most I'd never seen before as they are from a period during my dad's first marriage. One small package surprised me - my brother said they were Earl's, my maternal grandmother's boyfriend. One mystery is how my brother got them; but the big mystery for me lies in this picture, with no date or inscription.

****

There are poker mysteries too. Case in point: I've ITMed in three of three blogger games I've played: BritBloggerment, the Monkey and the Mookie. Online poker has been so cold to me lately, I'm in a state of disbelief at the moment.

Another mystery to me is when people who know me, and know that I often fly by the seat of my pants, am math challenged and have the attention span of a small gnat are genuinely surprised when I exhibit all of those qualities at a low-cost poker game amongst friends.

And yet another: why do I keep getting all these lovely notes from people encouraging me to register on pokerweblogs.com when I am apparently already in their database? And how did I get in their database exactly?

****

The mind boggles.

Live blogging the WBCOP

Wow. This is going to be crazy. Here's the math as I see it:

1331 bloggers + T10,000 = one loooong tourney.

On top of that I feel like a dogs breakfast, thanks to some virus-laden student or another. I'm prepared for a long haul - tea, OJ, crackers, and a (hopefully) good wireless connection in the bedroom. If I lag out for a while, you'll know I've gone to sleep.

****

3:00 - I'm seated at the table to left of jeciimd. He's the only one I know at the table.

3:24 - I've had nada, but it's amazing how having 10,ooo starting chips with blinds of 50/100 will loosen a girl up a bit. Of course, it could be the Dayquil.

3:33 - still folding. But the girlie chat is running and the entertainment value is high

3:57 - still folding. Stole some blinds with a hammer raise, but that's about it. yay.

4:05 - break, and i'm still in it thanks to my newfound ability to fold every fucking hand. Also in the Brit bloggerment (thanks Brain!)

4:14 - AA in the WBCOP - and they held up, be still my heart! After an hour I'm at T10,275...pretty much where I started.

4:38 - up to T25,975 thanks to KA>QQ esp when a K flops *grin

5:29 - did you know that 66 > 88? Neither did I. Down to 9,039. BTW, I hate ppl who say "I have to leave" then proceed to take your chips.

5:39 - Presto is gold, rivered a set against JQ. T13,000, 273 / 300

6:17 - trying to live blog while playing 2 games and chatting is proving beyond me. BUT I have ITM'ed in the Britbloggerment (Astin, I owe you one!) and have managed to stay in the Blogger Freeroll when As8S proved better than KA off. Yay eights!!

6:38 - out in 166th. AT looked goo against JK when a T flopped, but a J rivered and I'm done. Soooo close!

6:41 - and out of the BritBloggerment in 4th for $22.80. MY QQ not so hot against presto when a 5 flops. Ah well.... I did get one loverly hand in the BritBloggerment:

****

HUUUGE thanks to everyone who stopped by the table and wished me well in the WBCOP - it makes all the difference!

And HUUUGE congrats to the WPBT blogger brethren that made it into the prizes! You rock!

No George, I was serious....can I take lessons from you on late-stage play? Please? Pretty please?

To do list.

Well it's only a week into Hunny Bunny's 6-week cross-Canada tour, and I'm at odds with myself already. I'm bored, I'm lonely, and I'm driven to doing things I don't usually do just to fill the time.

For example, cleaning.

Yick.

So today I thought I'd try one of those To Do list thingies that organized people are always going on about. Be detailed, they say. Be specific, they say. It'll change your whole outlook, they gush.

I'm skeptical. But here's my list for today anyway.
  1. hit the snooze button 3 times instead of 7 (failed)
  2. make coffee at home instead of spending far too much at Starbucks (failed, ran out of time, see #1)
  3. make lunch (failed, same reason as #2)
  4. iron new linen shirt that I've been dying to wear (failed, same reason as #2, wtf was I thinking buying a shirt that needed ironing every 17 minutes anyway?!?)
  5. make bed (failed)
  6. top up oil in bike before heading to school (oil light's been flickering on and off for a week now. I'm pretty sure that's not a good thing.)
  7. get attendance done on time for once
  8. write the grade 11 programming test (period 6) while the grade 9's are writing their Internet/www test (period 1 & 2)
  9. go to bank at lunch
  10. take back crappy ipod speakers that sound like tin cans
  11. grab all articles and photos for newsletter before leaving school (I do their layouts and web updates as a separate contract).
  12. Bring all marking home for the weekend. Actually DO IT rather than letting it languish on the dining table all weekend.
  13. go to Lettuce Knit. I don't need anything but there's something I want to make, and nothing in my stash will work quite the way I want it to. Plus I want to check out the new Habu yarn - stainless steel wire wrapped with silk. No idea what I'm going to make with it, but I want it.
  14. stop off at Beer Store on the way home and pick up supplies.
  15. stop off at grocery store and get food. And pick up snacks this time....carrot sticks are not suitable weekend nibbles.
  16. once home, crack open a beer, fire up laptop, and see who is on the girlie chat that I can bother.
  17. remember to have Full Tilt open at 9 for the Friday Night Bloggerment (password = donkarama). I think the first 4 hands will be all-ins tonight.
  18. have some fun, and forget that the apartment is all too quiet.
  19. Added: Go and congratulate Jules on the new addition to her family!

Hopes dashed. But hope springs eternal.

I got all excited when I read on Tao of Poker of the old Saturdays with Dr. Pauly, and the upcoming Sundays with Dr. Pauly.

The Saturday series was my first real introduction to blogger pokery goodness, and set in motion the series of events that caused Waffles to call me his own personal ATM for a period of time.

I thought about how embarrassed I am now by how badly I played (I place fourth in the first one by some of the most fugly suckouts ever...I still cringe), but mostly I remembered how much fun it was playing with everyone for the first time, and getting totally hooked. The memory made me a tad...well.....moist.

So imagine my utter disappointment upon reading that the Sunday series is about football.

Now nothing against football, but it's just never stirred me the way it does for some of you lot. I've had it explained to me...a lot (so please don't try anymore, I beg you). I've watched the CFL, and blindly cheered on my hometown team even in the face of incredible suckage. I've sat through Sundays filled with NFL. I've watched my fair share of Grey Cups and Superbowls. But I've come to the conclusion that I must be missing a chromosome or something, because my only reaction is meh.

I really seriously don't understand football. And I really seriously don't want to.

HOWEVER.

That being said, I've half a mind to enter the Sundays with Dr. Pauly anyway. Hey, look what happened the last time I played a game I didn't really understand with this crowd. I lost some time and money, but had many laughs and made many IFFs. Still not sure though.

In any case, you should still go sign up. I mean, what else are you going to do on Sundays?

Check out Pauly's blog for details. As if you haven't already.

Enough said.

On the one hand:

It was four days of not working, of enjoying the scenery that is Northern Ontario. Cooking was done by someone else. I was able to chill out and chat with some of my colleagues in a more convivial atmosphere - while drinking beer by a campfire, looking at the stars. All amenities were at our disposal: kayaks, canoes, all sport equipment, access to the swimming area and hiking trails, etc.

And the weather was spectacular.

However the other hand:
It was four days (and three nights) with 80 girls between the ages of 12 and 18.
