By the way, how do you convince bloglines to produce a public roll -- I (an alleged CS professional) have struggled fruitlessly with it on at least three occasions.

You're going to kick yourself. First go to Account, then Blog Settings. click Yes, publish my Blogroll the Save Changes.
Then click on the Share tab, and grab the code. Easy peasey :-)

In my defense I do have to say that it never occurred to me to look under "blog settings" for something to do with my blogroll.
Since I don't have a bloglines blog (does anyone?) I just never looked at that tab.
